A blank text box is the wrong place to start when someone's looking at you. Phrase Hopper starts from the phrases you already know you'll need, keeps them one tap away, and carries them from one country to the next.
One phrasebook, every country. Save a phrase once, in your own language. When you move on from Turkish to Vietnamese, every phrase, pin and category comes with you. New translations are prepared automatically, and a Turkish line is never shown under a Vietnamese label.

There's no time to hunt for the right button mid-conversation. Phrase Hopper gives each of you a microphone, and they stay exactly where they are. Tap yours when you speak, tap theirs when they reply, and read what each of you meant.
This is a scripted demo of a shop conversation in Istanbul. It doesn't use your microphone. Tap English to "speak", then tap Türkçe for the reply.
Tap your mic and talk. The turn ends by itself about two seconds after you stop.
Check what was heard and the translation. Nothing plays until you tap Play.
When they reply, point to their mic. It's always on the right, labeled in their language.
Tap English on the left when you speak, or Türkçe on the right when they do.
A keyboard sits beside each mic. Too loud, or the mic is off? Either of you can type instead.
A turn ends on its own once the speaker stops. Prefer tapping to stop? Turn that off in Settings.
Misheard a word? Edit the transcript and the turn translates again by itself.
Save any turn as a phrase. A reply you save is kept in your language, ready for the next country.
Your phrasebook
Start with about 50 phrases for greetings, restaurants, transport, shopping, lodging and help. Edit them, delete them and add your own. It's your list, and it goes with you on every trip.
Each phrase can carry a note that's never translated, like "point at the menu". Pin the ones you reach for most, and tag greetings with the times of day they make sense.
Filter by Pinned, Most used or Useful now. Uses in the current country count first, so a new trip starts useful and adapts quickly.
Export your phrasebook to a file whenever you like. Importing merges by phrase and never removes anything.

Speech recognition and voices depend on the language and your iPhone. Some languages can't recognize speech offline yet. When that's the case, the app says so and typing still works.

Private by default. No account and no sign-in. Phrases and history live on your iPhone, and conversation audio is never saved.
Out loud, even with AirPods in. Turn on "Always use iPhone speaker" and phrases play for the other person, not in your ears.
Slower when it helps. Tap Slow in Show for one gentle replay, or have every phrase speak more slowly.
The screen stays on. Your iPhone won't dim mid-conversation while Phrase Hopper is open, if you want it that way. Show large always keeps it on.
Better voices, your choice. Pick any voice installed on your iPhone for each language. Enhanced and Premium voices sound much more natural.
Built for VoiceOver. Every control reads out its language and what it does, and text follows your Dynamic Type size.
Honest status
Phrase Hopper is brand new, so there's no wall of five-star quotes to show you. It's being field-tested on real trips before it goes to the App Store. Here's what works today, what's still being tested and what isn't built.

An iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later. Phrase Hopper is built on Apple's own translation and speech frameworks, which is why it's iPhone-only.
Mostly, if you prepare. On Wi-Fi, open Settings and tap Download under the local language. That gets the translation pack and speech recognition for offline use in one step. Phrases that are already translated keep working offline.
Some languages can't recognize speech offline yet. When that's the case, the app tells you, and typing still works.
From Apple's Translation framework on your iPhone. The "Most natural" style uses Apple Intelligence models if your iPhone has them, and "Fastest" uses downloaded language packs. Phrase Hopper doesn't run a translation server of its own.
It's machine translation. It's good for everyday travel phrases, but it isn't perfect. For anything that matters, like allergies, medication, addresses or prices, open Show, tap Original, then Check meaning to see it translated back, and confirm with the person you're talking to.
If a local suggests better wording, save it with "Correct this translation" and Phrase Hopper will use it every time.
There's no account and no sign-in. Your phrasebook and use history are stored on your iPhone. The microphone listens only while a turn is open, and conversation audio is never saved. You can export a backup file whenever you like.
No. Choose any of the 20 languages as your language in Settings. If you change it later, phrases you've already saved stay in the language you wrote them in, and the app asks before anything changes.
Because muscle memory is faster than reading. Your mic is always on the left and theirs is always on the right, whoever spoke last. Their mic is labeled in their own language, so they can find it without help.
